Dark Paradise cover
Mala LaCroix has spent her whole life trying to escape her destiny. As the last in a long line of “witch women,” she rejects the notion of spirits and hoodoo and instead does her best to blend in. But when she finds a dead body floating in the bayou behind her house, Mala taps into powers she never knew she had. She’s haunted by visions of the dead girl, demanding justice and vengeance.
Landry Prince has always had a crush on Mala, but when Mala discovers his sister, murdered and marked in some sort of Satanic ritual, he starts to wonder if all the rumors about the LaCroix family are true. Yet after Mala uses her connection to the spirit world to identify his sister’s killer, he starts to form his own bond to her . . . a very physical one. As they move closer to each other and closer to the truth, Mala and Landry must risk everything—their families, their love, and even their lives.
Angie is giving away a $25 Amazon Gift Card.

So happy to have my agent mates: Yelena Casale and Tina Moss on my blog today to talk about why they write and read Urban Fantasy. Also make sure to check out their soon to be released book: A Touch of Darkness coming October 31, 2013.

A Touch of Darkness

Book Blurb:
Cassie’s working for a tightwad boss at a pretentious NYC diner, dealing with paralyzing pain that doctors can’t diagnose, and trying to hide her hands that glow purple whenever she …well, whenever.

So, when a mysterious stranger walks out of her dreams and into her life to spout some nonsense about her being a mythical creature, she chalks it up to one more crazy thing to add to her it’s-a-crappy-life list. Yet, when the stranger’s predictions start to come true, she discovers a world that could shake up her humdrum existence.

The book releases October 31st. For now, it can be added to Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18392580-a-touch-of-darkness

Why do we write, and read, urban fantasy?

Our everyday lives are full of worries, stress, anxieties and…well, everyday life. We work at our day jobs, cook, clean our houses and spend time with our families. We live full lives that are rich with hobbies, care for our pets and, occasionally, new exciting things like travel.

But once in a while, we want to be taken away to a different world, experience events and feelings that are not the norm in our everyday lives, and know what it would be like to be someone else. Urban fantasy can provide an escape into this other life, a temporary reprieve, a vacation in a manner, that gives us a fresh new perspective into our own lives, or provides us with rest, if nothing else.

That is what reading urban fantasy is all about. It is also why we write in this genre. Creating a fun new world, a unique twist on a certain mythology, characters that have exceptional abilities is an exciting job. The characters in urban fantasy overcome problems in ways that we would often like to overcome our own problems. They conquer their fears and fight on, no matter what needs to be done. We don’t always get to be heroic in our everyday lives, but there are always situations where we can encounter and overcome our own fears. We believe that is one of the main attractions of the genre, what many relate to within it.

The appeal of the urban fantasy is that it is about putting magical, supernatural and unexpected into the recognizable, comfortable, commonplace world. We get to build a world that is accessible, yet not real, scary, yet fun, challenging, yet heroic.

We hope that the readers who pick up our urban fantasy A Touch of Darkness will enjoy getting a little reprieve for their own everyday worries for a little while.

A smile. An encouraging word. A thoughtful gesture. Each day people interact with us, help, and make our day a bit brighter and full. This is especially true in the Writing Community.

Take a second to think about writers you know, like the critique partner who works with you to improve your manuscript. The writing friend who listens, supports and keeps you strong when times are tough. The author who generously offers council, advice and inspiration when asked.

So many people take the time to make us feel special, don’t they? They comment on our blogs, re-tweet our posts, chat with us on forums and wish us Happy Birthday on Facebook.

Kindness ROCKS!

To commemorate the release of their book The Emotion Thesaurus, Becca and Angela at The Bookshelf Muse are hosting a TITANIC Random Act Of Kindness BLITZ. And because I think KINDNESS is contagious, I’m participating too!

I am randomly picking my critique group YA Fiction Fanatics (YAFF), who are absolutely FABULOUS. These ladies are not only supportive, but have helped to shape my writing and stories. I would not be 1/2 the writer I am without them. YAFF members, for my RAOK gift, I’m giving away a copy of Twenty Boy Summer by Sarah Ockler on your behalf to 1 lucky commenter.

I really appreciate my fellow YAFF members

So if you have a minute stop by and tell them how awesome they are!

Do you know someone special that you’d like to randomly acknowledge? Don’t be shy–come join us and celebrate! Send them an email, give them a shout out, or show your appreciation in another way. Kindness makes the world go round. 🙂

Becca and Angela have a special RAOK gift waiting for you as well, so hop on over to The Bookshelf Muse to pick it up.

Have you ever participated in or been the recipient of a Random Act Of Kindness?  Let me know in the comments!

Contest winner to be announced on Friday May 18, 2012.
